Just an Ordinary Dude: Lessons From Following Paul’s Footsteps in Greece

Experiencing Paul’s Journey Firsthand

For years, I dreamed of visiting Greece, walking among its ancient ruins, and immersing myself in the landscape where Paul lived and ministered. Experiencing these sites firsthand was transformational. Suddenly, Paul wasn’t a distant, almost mythic figure with a halo over his head—he was a real man, an ordinary dude like you and me, called to extraordinary purposes for the kingdom of God.

This past spring my wife and I visited Philippi, Ephesus, Rhodes, and Athens, seeing the roads Paul traveled, the theaters where he preached, and the ruins of temples, baths, and marketplaces that were part of his daily life. Standing in these locations made the stories of Acts come alive in ways that reading Scripture alone never could.

The Power of Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things

What struck me most is that Paul was just a regular man with a bold call. He faced persecution, opposition, and danger—but he pressed forward with courage and grace. Seeing the prison in Philippi where Paul and Silas were held, and the spot where the Roman guard was converted, reminded me that God works through ordinary people who are willing to step into His purposes.

On Rhodes, we saw the bay where Paul arrived, setting up churches and leaving disciples to continue the work. In Ephesus, we stood in a theater holding 25,000 people—the same place where Paul faced riots for preaching the gospel. These moments were awe-inspiring, humbling, and deeply encouraging.

Paul’s life is proof that God calls ordinary people to do extraordinary things. And the same is true for us today. Every believer who has encountered God carries a call to advance His kingdom, no matter how “ordinary” they feel.

Selah Moments: Pause, Reflect, and Listen

This trip also reminded me of the importance of Selah—pausing to reflect and listen to God. Amid the hustle of life, ministry, and family, it’s easy to lose sight of God’s presence and guidance. Taking time to rest, reflect, and connect with Him is essential for sustaining courage and clarity in our calling.

Lessons for Today

  1. Courage Comes from God: Like Paul, we are called to step boldly into God’s purposes, even when facing opposition.

  2. Ordinary People Can Do Extraordinary Things: You don’t need to be perfect or extraordinary to be used by God—faithful obedience is what matters.

  3. Pause to Reflect: Selah moments allow us to hear God’s voice, align with His purposes, and gain perspective on our calling.

  4. Engage the World Boldly: There are still people seeking the truth of the gospel. Like Paul, we are called to bring freedom, hope, and a personal relationship with God to those who are hungry.

Moving Forward

Our journey in Greece was more than a vacation—it was a reminder of the weight and beauty of God’s call on every believer. Paul’s courage, grace, and commitment challenge us to live with intentionality and boldness.

We all have a role to play in advancing God’s kingdom, whether in our families, communities, or broader culture. You don’t need to wait for permission—you just need to step forward in faith, equipped by God’s Spirit, and do the extraordinary through Him.

Let’s go together to set and shape the culture—living boldly, faithfully, and intentionally as ordinary people doing extraordinary things for God’s kingdom.
